A Typical Day
Safety is everyone’s responsibility at Hilmar Cheese Company. The Senior Safety Program Manager collaborates across the organization to champion a safety culture, achieve our safety goals, and be the high visibility leader for our safety programs. This senior manager role works with and influences site safety personnel and management groups to develop and deliver HCC’s safety strategy. This role requires high visibility, strong communication and influencing skills, and a demonstrated passion for safety.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee development, implementation, and ongoing renewal of safety strategy & practices at all facilities. Achieve the best business outcome without jeopardizing safety or compliance.
- Champions the core tenants of a safety culture across the enterprise connecting with HCC’s core values of Relationship, Integrity, Teamwork, Improvement and Excellence.
- Develops, plans, implements, monitors, enforces, audits and maintains cost effective programs, policies, and procedures to prevent accidents; eliminate or control exposures and comply with client specific policies and procedures and the rules and regulations of local, state, and federal regulatory agencies
- Lead and / or conduct root-cause analysis, interpretation, change management, and reporting of health and safety incidents.
- Analyze, interpret, and implement safety learnings to achieve a continuously improving safety environment.
- Working closely with site and corporate staff, own the development and reporting of progress / KPIs for company safety culture.
- Be the corporate safety subject matter expert with customers, regulators, and staff. Providing safety leadership and strategic direction to facility Safety Managers.
- Ensure all facilities can adequately meet all emergency response plan procedures.
- Manage corporate safety resources and related departmental budgets.
- Oversees worker’s compensation claims management process. Reviews internal and external loss reports. Ensuring insurance carriers are providing optimal claims service
- Manages the medical provider relationship – develop a relationship where provider is an advocate for HCC without jeopardizing the health of the employee.
- Develops and manages the resources necessary to defend the company from litigation
- Recommends corrective actions or preventative measures and ensures implementation of these measures
- Ensures job sites and facilities have suitable safety coverage
- Performs site visits to develop relationships with crews while performing safety audits on a periodic basis
- Inspects organizational facilities to identify existing or potential safety, health, and environmental hazards
- Prepares studies and analysis of accidents ad hazards for use by company personnel and outside agencies
- Develops statistical data relating to the safety program and distributes to management
- Provides training resources and engages in person-to-person training
What You Will Need
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field plus 7 years related experience, OR Master’s degree plus 3 years related experience.
- Very knowledgeable of OSHA regulations.
- Multi plant safety management and construction safety experience.
- Proven ability to leave others, particularly supervising off-site personnel
- Communication and interpersonal skills to effectively manage and motivate employees and communicate objectives and action plans. Excellent grammar and writing skills.
- Ability to implement safety techniques to improve/maintain safety performance.
- Ability to establish positive relationships with internal and external individuals.
- Ability to research pertinent facts, data, and other information from internal and external sources to improve safety culture.
- Proficient use of computer and corresponding programs – Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Strong organizational skills.
- The position requires 15-30% travel.
What Will Put You Ahead
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field plus 10 years related experience OR Master’s degree plus 5 years related experience.
- Knowledge of and experience working with CalOSHA.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- Process Safety Management (PSM) experience
Physical Demands
The role has periods of time when the work environment is sedentary and conducted in an office environment balanced with frequent occasions that require prolonged walking or standing, lifting/ carrying/handling moderate weight objects on a regular basis. Is required to wear PPE and have a regular presence in manufacturing and warehouse environments in both temperature controlled and uncontrolled locations.
