A Typical Day

This is a R&D position with a designated obligation to the QA/QC chemistry lab.  The Research Chemist conducts and/or supports product/process research and development initiatives through the proper application of development-stage analytical methods, evaluating current analytical procedures, and providing analytical support to Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, QA, and Manufacturing.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop, validate, implement and transfer as needed analytical methods to measure chemical composition, chemical/physical properties and biological activities of dairy process streams and finished products to support research projects, product/process development initiatives and QA/QC testing requirements.
  • Conduct research projects which require proper utilization of development-stage analytical methods. And assist in the interpretation of the analytical results on implications to such research projects. 
  • Provide technical support and ongoing maintenance on existing analytical methods and technologies used in R&D, QA and Manufacturing.
  • Write appropriate analytical methods for internal R&D use and customer communication as well as SOPS for analytical method transfers to QA or Manufacturing. 
  • Conduct training of lab and plant personnel to conduct routine QC/QA analytical methods.
  • Maintain an accurate laboratory notebook according to current protocol.
  • Maintain and advance current knowledge of analytical technologies through scientific literature, professional organizations, instrument manufacturer trials and relevant method publication. 

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field plus 5 years’ related experience OR Master’s degree plus 1 year related experience.
  • Knowledge of research principles and ability to design and perform experiments requiring control of process variables, execution of complicated methods and statistical analysis of data.
  • Good chemistry knowledge including chemical composition, structures, properties and reactions of many compounds in milk and related dairy products.
  • Knowledge of chromatography, spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry techniques for determination of organic compounds including proteins.
  • Basic knowledge of dairy-related chemistry, specifically in the field of dairy protein and lactose chemistry as well as nutritional chemistry.
  • Basic knowledge of food production processes and quality control principles.
  • Advanced experience with Microsoft applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access)
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work with multiple projects and deadlines is required.  

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field plus 7 years’ related experience or Master’s degree plus 2 years’ related experience.
  • Analytical method development and/or research experience in Food, Dairy or Pharmaceutical industry.
  • Analytical method development and/or research experience in protein characterization and/or proteomics.
  • Experience with real-time process control technologies and measurements.
  • Experience in the application and use of chemometrics and/or chemometric-based analytical methods.
  • Experience with a variety of chromatography/spectroscopy data systems (i.e. Chemstation, Chromeleon, Analyst, Integrator, MS Workstation, Mass Hunter Open Lab, OPUS, etc.)
     

Physical Demands & Work Environment

The work is primarily performed in an office environment and the physical demands are characteristic of a mostly sedentary role.  Specific details of the essential functions of the position is available in the Job Safety Analysis, made available on request.
