Lab Technician Research and Development

A Typical Day

The Lab Technician R&D is responsible for successfully performing daily laboratory analysis and job responsibilities in an R&D setting. Ensure accurate and timely flow of information to support the cheese and ingredient business. Role will also require project work and assistance in development of methods and techniques in areas of dairy microbiology and chemistry.

Job Responsibilities

  • Efficiently perform lab analysis on in-process and finished product samples. 
  • Can support experiments at lab scale, in pilot plant and at commercial scale, to assist in the development of new products. 
  • Results driven; ensures the target is clearly understood and is actively being worked towards within an appropriate timeframe. 
  • Able to make media and plate samples to test for bacteria and phage.
  • Works on developing knowledge of dairy science.
  • Instrument maintenance and calibrations, support method development. 
  • Ability to read, study, understand and implement published lab procedures and tasks. 
  • Ability to be flexible and perform multiple tests and steps simultaneously. 
  • Input report results and take the initiative to act on the basis of the data. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. 
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Annual completion of OSHA required safety training.

What You Will Need

  • English skills must be proficient to understand, read, write and speak English
  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution and 2 year lab experience in food or beverage manufacturing OR Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry or Microbiology or related field.
  • Proficiency working with Microsoft Office Software such as Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and microbiology.
  • Understanding of good laboratory practices.
  • Proficient in areas of laboratory microbiology and chemistry.

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, or other irritating substances.

  • Exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity depending on time of year.

Working surface is primarily concrete. Where standing is required, there are rubber mats which are one-half inch thick.
