Environmental Engineer

A Typical Day

The Environmental Engineer is responsible for the accurate performance of gathering samples, performing periodic compliance inspections, collecting data and performing other environmental related activities in accordance with HCC procedures and regulatory requirements. Coordinate all aspects of the Wastewater compliance function including compliance initiatives, administrative duties, training development, risk assessment, reporting and the development, delivery, and maintenance of permitted processes.

Job Responsibilities

•Ensure prompt transmission of accurate data and information to the Environmental staff regarding concerns and plant observations.
•Conduct weekly inspection of all wastewater process areas at Hilmar; document findings and work with others to address findings.
•Rotating with other Environmental staff, perform general compliance functions such as: conduct inspections of all chemical storage areas, assure proper container labelling, container segregation and consistency with the Hazardous Materials Business Plan, collect well water samples; provide input for development of required reports, maintain hazardous waste manifest records log; schedule, coordinate, and execute source testing activities in compliance with WDR standards and reporting deadlines.
•Assesses chemicals and equipment used in the manufacturing process for potential risks; develops mitigation plans and drives changes.
•Conduct weekly reviews of Hilmar operational data to ensure compliance with conditions contained in Hilmar site air permits; work with others to address findings.
•Work with Environmental Director to develop and maintain documentation formats to capture data necessary to document/ensure environmental compliance.
•Collect data for development of Hilmar deep well permit required reports.
•Support administration and management of Hilmar reuse water irrigation program.
•Provide technical support to other departments as it relates to regulations including but not limited to: record keeping audits, or process control automation improvements and review.
•Provides ongoing technical consultation and support for the development and maintenance of regulatory compliant CWA, CAA, RCRA, etc. programs 
•Develop course materials and train employees on topics relevant to their field and regulatory compliance including but not limited to, hazardous waste handling, hazardous and universal waste storage, spill mitigation, spill reporting, document handling and others as necessary. 
•Establish effective working relationships with internal customers and external regulatory stakeholders.
•Place high priority on food safety and sanitation by understanding and executing HCC’s food safety and sanitation policies and procedures. 
•Prioritize safety above all other job duties by having a safety first approach at all times; report any safety issues, participate in root cause analysis and departmental team meetings, report observations, opportunities to your teams and follow up.  
•To ensure compliance with appropriate regulatory requirements through:
oTimely compilation and submission of required reports and other correspondence to regulatory authorities;
oNegotiation of permits and applicable permit conditions;
oLiaison and communication with regulatory authorities; 
Management of audits and/or inspections by regulatory authorities;
oRegular review of water reclamation operations and environmental systems; 
oParticipation in regulatory authorities and other entities outside meetings, workshops and working committees. 

What You Will Need
  • Bachelors degree in Environmental science or related engineering discipline or equivalent through continuing education and/or certification programs and 5 years of progressive responsibility in environmental compliance roles
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry and chemical reactions
  • Knowledge of collection and interpretation of drinking water samples required
  • Knowledge of air permitting requirements required
  • USEPA data reporting experience required
  • Knowledge of California and USEPA hazardous waste regulatory requirements required
  • Intermediate use of Microsoft Excel using formulas and pivot tables required

 

What Will Put You Ahead
  • Bachelor’s  degree in Environmental science or related field plus 7 years of broad, in-depth knowledge of environmental management experience OR Master’s Degree and 3 years of related experience
  • Proven ability to communicate and influence external regulators and industry organizations.
  • Project management experience.
  • Understanding of farming and milk processing practices.

Working surface is primarily concrete. Where standing is required, there are rubber mats which are one-half inch thick.
