Director, Procurement

A Typical Day

The Procurement Director is responsible for all raw material procurement activities for Hilmar Cheese Company, including procurement strategy development, sourcing strategy, vendor quality assurance, vendor relationship management and overall vendor performance.

Job Responsibilities

  • Design, build and implement procurement strategies, policies and programs that guide the organization in maintaining and improving its competitive position and profitability.
  • Lead the establishment, implementation, and maintenance of raw material standards.
  • Lead the creation of new supply chains as necessary to support expansion to new markets. 
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and potential suppliers; understand market data/conditions to formulate procurement strategy for improved value and total cost.
  • Monitor and manage supplier compliance to contract terms. This includes product availability, quality and service level expectations, regulatory issues and cost.
  • Manage current risk management program offered to dairy suppliers.
  • Develop relationships with functions across HCC to effectively determine their goods and services’ needs.
  • Develop and maintain subject-matter expertise on designated categories to respond to both internal needs and external market trends.
  • Ensure purchasing activities conform to company policy and scope of authority. 
  • Lead development & implementation of inventory strategies that support HCC’s supply chain, with particular focus on supporting a resilient ‘always on’ operation while controlling costs. 
  • Identify, recommend, and implement changes to improve efficiencies and reduce cost and scrap.
  • Lead company-wide dairy by-products commercial business, with responsibility for maximizing profitable disposal of non-core dairy products including liquid and dry permeate, cream, and cheese waste.
  • Active efforts to influence events rather than passive acceptance; self-starting; the power, ability or instinct to begin or follow through energetically with a plan or task.

What You Will Need

  • Bachelor’s degree plus 10 years’ related experience, OR Master’s degree plus 5 years’ related experience.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive management experience with experience managing vendor and/or service providers.
  • Ability to lead, guide and direct actions and opinions of other so as to influence people and teams to high performance.
  • Familiarity with the budget process and financial statements.
  • Knowledge and ability to negotiate best vendor terms, pricing and delivery based on specific budget and schedule requirements. Knowledge of standard purchasing procedures and practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how analytics, business strategy, and operations work together to drive and execute strategy.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Master’s degree plus 7 years’ related experience.
  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing enterprise-wide, data driven planning and forecasting processes.
  • Leading & partnering on significant cross-functional initiatives on new sourcing & improvements.

Physical Demands

The work is primarily performed in an office environment and the physical demands are characteristic of a mostly sedentary role.  Specific details of the essential functions of the position is available in the Job Safety Analysis, made available on request.
