Applications Scientist, Ingredients

A Typical Day

The Scientist is responsible for conducting applications research on current and newly developed products in order to support sales, marketing, and research efforts.  In addition, provide technical training to internal and external customers through communication and demonstration of research data, results and conclusions.

Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct, coordinate, and manage application project requests relating to applications of dairy protein, and lactose ingredients in nutritional products and functional foods and similar market segments including definition of objectives, conducting research, documentation, and communication of results and conclusions.
  • Support of global sales efforts through timely completion of projects and conclusions.
  • Conduct testing and analysis of current and newly developed products to determine functional, nutritional and/or organoleptic properties and performance in finished applications.
  • Provide technical guidance to management, sales, and other departments relating the use and performance in finished applications.
  • Develop and maintain an understanding of commercial, trade, and regulatory issues pertaining to the marketing and use of food ingredients in key countries.
  • Preparation of product demonstrations and assistance at tradeshows, distributor and customer locations.
  • Occasional travel to promote Hilmar products and technologies.
  • Attend conferences and seminars to learn about current developments in research of food ingredients and applied sciences.
  • Manage and maintain confidential information including R&D projects, sales contracts, financial information, and confidential and proprietary formulations.
  • Conduct characterization studies of competitor ingredients.
What You Will Need
  • English skills must be proficient to understand, read, write, and speak English.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or related field.
  • One (1) year experience in formulation development, lab/pilot equipment.
  • Computer proficiency of Word, Excel (using Statistics), and Outlook
  • Awareness of food regulations and guidelines for accurate representation of application formulas.
  • Ability to write technical reports and interpretation of scientific data.
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Master’s degree and one (1) year related experience.
  • Understanding of statistical analysis and implementation.
  • Technical knowledge of the functionality and chemistry of proteins and other key ingredients used in the development of food systems including, diary, nutrition, bakery, meat, and savory.
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge to troubleshoot difficulties in various customer applications.
  • Computer knowledge of GENESIS software
  • Experience with SAP systems

  • Required to work at heights and in fairly small areas.
  • Pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, handling, and grasping, twisting/turning, repetitive bending.

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, or other irritating substances.
  • Exposure to solvents or chemicals.
  • Exposure to slippery walking surfaces: water.
  • Exposure to market changes in temperature and humidity depending on time of year.

Working surface is primarily concrete. Where standing is required, there are rubber mats which are one-half inch thick.
