Reliability Engineer

A Typical Day

The role of the Reliability Engineer (RE) is to apply engineering practices to monitor equipment condition, develop strategic solutions in support of Hilmar Cheese asset management plan and assess performance against organizational metrics or departmental KPIs. The RE will engage maintenance, operations and technical teams to drive out sources of repetitive failure in components, equipment and processes while identifying and mitigating risks that could adversely affect plant operations.  The RE will also be using analytical methods from reports, charts and related data to determine potential reliability issues and implement solutions around asset life cycle management, allowing for early prediction and failure analysis.
 

Job Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements asset reliability strategy to maximize asset uptime and supports robust preventive and predictive maintenance programs (PM/PdM).
  • Drives standardization of processes and procedures using Lean Manufacturing concepts and implements best practices from reliability excellence initiatives toward continuous improvement.
  • Supports rebuild programs covering mechanical and electrical systems/components through Operator Based Maintenance (OBM, TPM) and works with vendors and site maintenance personnel on reliability of critical assets.
  • Investigates and reviews equipment failures with cross functional teams using reports and historical data to determine appropriate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) against failure reoccurrence, including tracking of actionable items from start to finish.  
  • Develops, mentors and coaches Reliability Coordinators on implementing reliability centered maintenance and promulgating the principles across all manufacturing functions in the organization. 
  • Participates in the design review of capital additions, new installations or process changes to ensure full life cycle maintainability of equipment, utilities, and facilities.
  • Develops engineering solutions with a data driven mindset to mitigate repetitive failures and problems that adversely affect plant availability, performance, capacity, safety, quality, cost, or regulatory compliance.
  • A self-starter, logical thinker capable of developing reliability programs and improving existing systems with respect to work management, materials management and reliability engineering work streams.

What You Will Need

  • High School Diploma and 10 years related experience OR Associate's degree and 5 years’ experience OR Bachelor's degree plus 3 years related experience OR Master’s degree.
  • Experience in the management of industrial plant reliability and asset management programs.
  • RCA Root Cause Analysis – 5 Whys, Fishbone, FMEA Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, Criticality Analysis
  • Competent in the implementation of Predictive/Maintenance methods and technologies that include: Vibration Sampling and Analysis, Lubrication Sampling and Analysis, Thermography: Mechanical, Electrical, Ultrasonic Thickness, Ultrasonic Sound: Electrical, Mechanical, Air Machine Alignment and Balancing
  • Working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Proven leadership and teambuilding skills.
     

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years related experience  OR Master’s degree plus 1 year related experience
  • Project management certification and/or training
  • Lean Six Sigma certification and/or training.
  • Software program proficiency in SAP, AutoCAD and MS Project.
  • Competent with data analysis techniques that can include: Statistical Process Control, OEE Overall Equipment Effectiveness, Reliability Modeling and Prediction 
  • Implementation of, and evaluation of engineering systems to meet, 3A sanitary standards, PMO, quality by design, and USDA dairy regulations.

Physical Demands & Work Environment


The role has periods of time when the work environment is sedentary and conducted in an office environment balanced with frequent occasions that require prolonged walking or standing, lifting/ carrying/handling moderate weight objects on a regular basis.   Is required to wear PPE and have a regular presence in manufacturing and warehouse environments in both temperature controlled and uncontrolled locations.
