Mill Operator

A Typical Day

The Milling Operator is responsible for safe and efficient operational practices in all processing areas of the plant (dryers, packaging, warehouse, and milling operations) while meeting quality expectations The Milling Operator is responsible for operating all plant equipment related to the mills, processing finished product, maintaining a strong teamwork environment, voicing issues/concerns, lead, do continuous training, reduce downtime, meet production goals, and meet customer expectations. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Ability to operate, monitor, and control production processes in area of responsibility; including grade 2 & 3 responsibilities.  
  • Operate, monitor, and control production processes in area of responsibility.
  • Ability to perform periodic QC checks- sample product by physically taking samples, test samples using appropriate lab test equipment, and interpret sample results.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete paperwork.
  • Troubleshoot and correct all types of production issues.
  • Perform operator based preventative maintenance duties.
  • Communicate any and all issues to the correct personnel. 
  • Permit completion and coordination.
  • Ability to use a variety of common hand tools as well as operate a forklift, pallet jack & scissor lift.
  • Ability to accurately explain process flow for all areas.
  • Assist with special projects and improvement initiatives at the site.
  • Assist in assuring efficient operation of equipment, quality of product, and safety of all personnel.
  • Help coach and train teammates and participate in on the job, buddy training
  • Ability to take coverage of peers when needed.
  • Communicate, interact, and work effectively with all team members to help achieve production goals.  Communication must be conveyed professionally and in an appropriate manner.
  • Ability to relate, develop and conform to established policies, practices and procedures.
  • Active participation and ownership in your training and development program and associated activities, classes and events, which will be held before, during, after shifts and during scheduled days off
  • Perform master sanitation program duties as assigned.
  • The ability to find opportunities, to think outside of the box and share findings.
  • Must take initiative to see training opportunities and/or hold meetings as needed. 
  • Must be knowledgeable of all SOP’s and capable of following them.
  • Promoting safe work habits, leading by example, holding yourself and other accountable for unsafe acts.
  • Participate in departmental safety team. 
  • Must help train, develop, motivate and build positive lasting relationships with all peers.
  • Must help in the growth of developing peers for future growth within the company and to help develop and/or update the training program for specific areas. 
  • Complete the following annual training: OSHA required safety, hearing test, GMP, Incident Commander, Training Skills Assessment, LO/TO Training/Fall Protection, Hazwopper, Confined Space, Industrial lift licenses and complete Arc Flash training and pass exam
  • Participate in dust control, monitoring and training.
  • Complete Forklift training an obtain Forklift license every three year recertification
  • Complete Safety Incident Investigation awareness and reporting.
  • Complete all KPI tasks and requirements as presented. 
  • Must enroll in Leadership training programs.

What You Will Need

  • English skills must be proficient to understand, read, write and speak English
  • Must be able to work 12 hour variable shift, including weekends, holidays and overtime as needed
  • Communication, time management, organizational, and basic math skills.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Software such as Word, Excel and Outlook 
  • Ability to lift 60lbs
  • Experience/proficient and skilled in a level 2 and 3 and/or 2 years of production experience

What Will Put You Ahead

  • ​​​​​​High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution 
  • Prior feed mill/grain experience 
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical and electrical processes
  • Active/Past member of Departmental Safety Team
  • SAP and Wonder Ware experience
  • 1 plus years of manufacturing experience
  • Skilled in Permeate operator, packaging, dryer and warehouse (levels 1-3 roles)

  • Pushing, pulling, reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, handling and grasping, twisting/turning, repetitive bending.

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, or other irritating substances.

  • Exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity depending on time of year.

Working surface is primarily concrete. Where standing is required, there are rubber mats which are one-half inch thick.
