Maintenance Supervisor

A Typical Day

The Maintenance Supervisor is Responsible for the effective execution of all maintenance and projects within the plants at HCC. In order to fulfill these responsibilities in the most effective manner, the Maintenance Supervisor  must facilitate the development of a highly skilled, well trained, committed and spirited “Maintenance Team” to support the plant operations in their quest for high quality, low cost objectives as defined by the mission of Hilmar Cheese Company.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a safe and effective working environment for the Maintenance Team.
  • Conduct team meetings daily covering safety topics and weekly covering equipment, processes and expansion.  
  • Reviews available planned job package for completeness and correctness.
  • Refines and finalizes labor, parts, and priorities for all tasks.
  • Responsible for planning/scheduling of preventative and predictive maintenance.
  • Confirms that the proper numbers of mechanics are assigned to each job.
  • Assures that all jobs will be done economically, efficiently and safely.
  • Ensures, at the start of the shift and throughout the day, the prompt assignment of mechanics to specific jobs, which are appropriate to their possessed skills, and or to their training needs.
  • Ensures job quality and efficiency by frequently checking jobs in progress.
  • Controls time lost between jobs and at breaks and shift changes.
  • Makes tactical decisions when necessary; staying as close to schedule as possible.
  • Assure the acceptance of work as completed by talking with our internal customers.
  • Follow-up with mechanics on suggestions of ways to improve either planning or job methods.
  • Coordinates maintenance effort between shifts to achieve orderly change over.
  • Devote ample time and attention to formal and on-the-job training to enable mechanics to maintain/develop a high level of expertise with both new and existing equipment.
  • Communicate with the Maintenance Team to coordinate maintenance items to be completed.
  • Provide detailed reports on downtime issues to promote proactive responses and practices.
  • Continuous participation in set up and maintaining the storeroom, shop and CMMS.
  • Use SAP to create and close work orders, enter equipment data, track inventory and train mechanics on the proper use of SAP.
  • Continue to promote and foster effective “partnering” relationships with all Operations personnel on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain ‘On Call’ status.
  • Provide and promote “Excellence” in Customer Service.
  • Monitor your Teams effectiveness and work on continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with fellow Plant Supervisors to maintain effective partnering relationships with your customers.

  • Have excellent oral and written communication
  • Develop and mentor professional growth & advancement of hourly department staff 
  • Active participation and ownership in your training and development program and associated activities, classes and events, which will be held before, during, after shifts and during scheduled days off. 
  • Help coach and train teammates and participate in on the job, buddy training. 
  • Place high priority on food safety and sanitation by understanding and executing HCC’s food safety and sanitation policies and procedures.
  • Hold self and others accountable to HCC’s food safety & sanitation guidelines and policies by communicating any food safety incident, observation, or opportunity to your leadership team or teammates. 
  • Participate in food safety and sanitation root cause analysis and improvement activities when required. 
  • Prioritize safety above all other job duties by having a safety first approach at all times.
  • Report any safety issues, observations, opportunities to your teams and follow up. 
  • Participate in departmental safety teams.

What You Will Need
  • English skills must be proficient to understand, read, write and speak English
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Software such as Word, Excel and Outlook
  • 2 years of Industrial maintenance experience or 2 years of management experience in a manufacturing setting
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts (days/swings/graveyard).
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
What Will Put You Ahead
  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering or related field
  • SAP knowledge
  • Experience leading a team
  • Experience with tactical knowledge of production operations.
  • Experience with reading PI&D and tech manuals.

Working surface is primarily concrete. Where standing is required, there are rubber mats which are one-half inch thick.
