Cheese Plant Manager

A Typical Day

Manage day-to-day and strategic activities in support of the quality, yield, technical and mission objectives of Hilmar Cheese Company, with focus on Cheese Operations.

Job Responsibilities
  • Mandate adherence to all safety guidelines and work to provide a safe work environment for all employees
  • Hire, train, develop and evaluate staff to achieve optimum employee levels
  • Ensure compliance with current federal, state and local regulations
  • Take corrective action when necessary and on a timely basis in accordance with Company policy 
  • Consult with Human Resources Department when appropriate
  • Work closely with and assist all Department Managers to ensure the common business goals are met
  • Monitor daily production by reviewing all records and conducting department walkthroughs with supervisors
  • Identify, recommend and implement changes to improve quality, productivity and efficiency while maintaining within operating cost targets
  • Aggressively address areas of opportunity and take action on all corrective measures
  • Support major projects (e.g., installation of capital equipment, major repairs, etc.)
  • Keep current on information and technology affecting functional areas to increase innovation
  • Develop and mentor professional growth & advancement of department staff
  • Active participation and ownership in your training and development program and associated activities, classes and events, which will be held before, during, after shifts and during scheduled days off.  
  • Help coach and train teammates and participate in on the job, buddy training.
  • Place high priority on food safety and sanitation by understanding and executing HCC’s food safety and sanitation policies and procedures. 
  • Hold self and others accountable to HCC’s food safety & sanitation guidelines and policies by communicating any food safety incident, observation, or opportunity to your leadership team or teammates. 
  • Participate in food safety and sanitation root cause analysis and improvement activities when required.  
  • Prioritize safety above all other job duties by having a safety first approach at all times. 
  • Report any safety issues, observations, opportunities to your teams and follow up.  
  • Participate in departmental safety teams.

What You Will Need
  • English skills must be proficient to understand, read, write and speak English
  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution required and 5 years of manufacturing or operations experience 
  • 5+ years of advancement through progressive management positions 
What Will Put You Ahead
  • Bachelor of Science and/or Advance degree 
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Software such as Word, Excel and Outlook   
  • Strategic knowledge of production operations management for quality, yield and cost
  • Advanced knowledge of plant technical activities through technical study and training 
  • New equipment implementation through vendor facilitation and training
  • Advanced industry related courses and vendor trade shows 
  • Completion of HCC internal technical training programs

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, smoke, gases, or other irritating substances.

  • Exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity depending on time of year.

Working surface is primarily concrete. Where standing is required, there are rubber mats which are one-half inch thick.
